Nottingham Contemporary Gallery

When thinking of my idea, Nottingham's Contemporary Gallery kept springing to mind.
Featured on the 'Culture Show' upon it's opening it intends to redefine the 'Gallery' taking apart the simplicity of the whit cube concept and adding originality and personality to it's construciton.

The Initial Idea.

We are all used to the notion of white cube galleries, with their white walls and parquay flooring designed to let the art stand out and have a greater effect, but what happens when the exhibiton space is not so simple? What happens if the exhibition space itself becomes more interesting than the object?

I am interested in the whole notion of context, the idea that meaning and effect can change through different environments.

My dissertation is on the north south divide which in it’s simplest form is to do with perception, the perception that an object (person) can be different depending on their environment, which is essentially what my response to this module is all about.

Collaborate with furniture student to design simple flat pack 3d structure that will be transported to and assembeled in various locations with an idea to taking in the venues in different light/weather conditions

The focus here is on unique ways of SHOWing the EXHIBIT, in turn EXHIBITING the space around it.

Needs to be flat packed into a Holdall. Made out of light weight material with limited/no fixtures, needs to be super fast in both assembly and disassembly.

Final exhibition piece would be the wooden piece itself in front of the images in it’s various scenarios which will be in black frames.

Taking the notion of a blank gallery and fascinating object and flipping it to have a simple structure show off the landscape it is situated.

It is a technique that has become increasingly popular in design circles where an interesting photograph is overlayed with a simple shape – usually a circle which is then used to house text, thus making the body of text itself appear more interesting.

Using the object as a means of continuity.

NO PHOTOSHOPPING

All images must be genuine else there is no point!

Nathan Coley.

His Turner Prize nomination was four large cardboard sculptures of a synagogue, a mosque and a church, which he painted with stripes to blur the connotations of what themselves are sacred and in this age, controversial buildings.

Well it's time for me to start my own research,

Can't Catch The Train.

So it's my first day back proper and today we had the pleasure of accompanying Steve and his 3D course to York's National Railway museum. A Place I have visited many times in my youth and though never owning an anorak and a pair of binoculars, have found it fascinating on each visit.
But this time the context is different, I am no longer a cub scout on a summer outing, here i am as a 20 year old looking at the museum for it's artistic merit.
Whilst not completley sure of what exactly the motive behind the visit was and what it had to do with our course, I decided that I was here for a reason and that I would keep the title of our new brief - Exhibit/Show in mind and look at how these elements have been portrayed within the museum.
Set over a vast warehouse housing over 100 locamotives and various other interesting artifacts the asthetics of the exhibits change according to the pieces on show, for example the 'Royal Train' exhibit hosting vehicles travelled upon by Queens Victoria and Elizabeth, is complemented by royal china and cutlery and set off by a regal red carpet, shown on the right.

The Den Experiment.

As a means of not feeling too guilty that I shall be missing the first 3 days of the new term by having a week in the sun, I decided to come in and help out the new first years and also see what activities they were up to.
Chris Harman who was a 3rd year when I started the course was in charge of the activity which was part of his long-standing initiative - 'The Den Experiment', which relies on participants to create their vision of a Den using the provided materials, the firs day this was simply bamboo cane and cable ties, with additional materials such as plastic wrap and foil added on the second day.
I found the approach really inspiring and the way the simplicity of the brief gave the project space to breath in an unpretentious manner was really nice to watch.
